Kinderdijk Windmills

About This Tour...

From the cheese town of Gouda to the Windmills of Kinderdijk

A visit to Kinderdijk provides an impressive collection of 19 working windmills which were built around 1740 and are still kept on "active duty" today just in case of a fuel shortage or a modern day technology failure. This tour allows you to witness up close the intricate water system that exists throughout South Holland.
Your day starts in Gouda where you begin the journey to Kinderdijk. Along the bike path you will visit the town of Schoonhoven where you will take a ferry across the Lek River. Soon afterwards you will pass by the Ammerse Kade windmills, which are worth stopping to enjoy and photograph. Once the Kinderdijk windmills come into full view, be sure to stop and take the opportunity to enjoy them from this perspective, as this is one of the most photographed views. After spending an afternoon in Kinderdijk, you can continue back to Gouda or take a ferry to Rotterdam. Gouda is worth exploring and eating dinner at one of the many outdoor restaurants located in the market square. A perfect way to end the day!
There are no tickets or entrance fees required, as Kinderdijk has public access. The museum, however, is private and charges a modest entrance fee. Kinderdijk is a very popular tourist spot in the peak seasons of July and August and is best visited in the spring, early summer or fall to have the best experience.
