Amsterdam to Edam

About This Tour...

A one day round-trip along the water with optional train return

This route begins and ends at the free GVB ferries located behind Amsterdam Centraal Station. Be sure to take the correct ferry! First, you'll discover the slower pace of Amsterdam Noord as you head out toward the IJmeer and then enjoy a peaceful bicycle ride north along the water to Edam. Your first stop will be the picturesque village of Marken, where you catch the 30 minute ferry to Volendam. The town of Volendam is a popular tourist spot, so be prepared to exit ferry (go right) and follow the route back towards the water to continue your ride to Edam. This famous cheese town has retained its natural character and is a pleasure to walk around explore after a long bike ride.
On the return trip to Amsterdam you'll pass through the town of Monnickendam and then begin your journey inland through the Waterland region back to Amsterdam. During the long daylight hours of spring and summer, this is an easy and comfortable day outing with time for dining along the way.
You can also return on the train from the town of Purmerend, which is a short distance from Edam.

Edam cheese is known for it's cylindrical round shape as opposed to Gouda which is in the more traditional shape of a wheel. Ages and travels well.

Check out the seasonal Edam

outdoor cheese markets!
