Leeuwarden to Stavoren

About This Tour...

A ride through the heartland of Friesland

This tour begins at the NS train station in the provincial capital of Leeuwarden and ends at the ferry terminal in Stavoren. Unless you get an early start, this could be an aggressive one day tour, so we suggest breaking it up into two days or staying the first night in Leeuwarden.
Once you have left the city, you immediately find yourself in the bucolic countryside of Friesland surrounded by green fields, windmills and canal boats that seem to drift across the landscape. Your first stop will be the more modern city of Sneek, which also provides a good overnight option. As you head south of Sneek, the experience continues as before with canals, pastures and wooded forests. Enjoy the small towns along the way and take advantage of restaurant opportunities as this is a rural region.
When the route reaches the IJsselmeer, you will love the wide open views and pathways all the way to Stavoren. We promise you will hate to see this trip end! From here you can catch a ferry to Enkhuizen or train service to other destinations.
If continuing north, you should consider the town of Workum as a place to discover and spend an overnight.
